March is the end of winter in Tibet, and it gets a little warmer every day. It is still windy and dry, the air is thin and the sun is strong.
Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March. For temperatures, open roads and our Easter departures, see Easter in Tibet 2027.

Cultural Highlights in March
Monlam Prayer Festival
The Great Prayer Festival is held in Lhasa in the first Tibetan month, which usually falls in February or March. Monks gather at the Jokhang Temple for prayers and ceremonies.
Butter Lamp Festival
Held on the full moon of the first Tibetan month. Butter sculptures are displayed and thousands of butter lamps are lit around Barkhor Street.
What to Wear in March
The wind makes March feel colder than the thermometer says. Bring a warm down jacket, thermal layers and a windproof jacket. Sunscreen and good sunglasses are essential, and lip balm helps with the dry air.
Planning tip: if you would like to travel in early spring, talk to us early. You can book a tour during the closure for travel after Tibet reopens, and we will time your flights and hotels around the permit dates.
