What you can see in 6 days
Six days is enough for the classic western loop. After three days in Lhasa you drive over the Kamba La pass to Yamdrok Lake, on to Gyantse with its great Kumbum stupa, and sleep in Shigatse, Tibet’s second city, before visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery and returning to Lhasa.
Other six-day choices are Lhasa with Nyingchi in the east, where the valleys are lower, greener and forested, or Lhasa with a night by Namtso Lake. You can also arrive on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway from Xining and spend the time in Lhasa.
A typical 6-day route
- Days 1–3 — Lhasa
- Day 4 — Yamdrok Lake and Gyantse, overnight Shigatse
- Day 5 — Tashilhunpo Monastery, back to Lhasa
- Day 6 — Departure
Who it suits
Travellers who want to see more than the capital but have only a week. The western loop shows the farming valleys, the great monasteries of Gyantse and Shigatse and the high passes, and still brings you back to Lhasa for your flight or train.
Good to know
The highest point on the western loop is the Karo La pass at about 5,000 m, crossed by road. Best months are April to June and September to October. We arrange all permits.
