Do You Really Know How to Travel in Tibet?

The way of traveling to China is tremendously changed compared to before — and so is traveling in Tibet. Here are four modern advantages that make your journey effortless.

Five homegrown conveniences — a world-class high-speed rail, a satellite navigation system of China’s own, affordable high-speed mobile data, cashless QR payment, and lightning-fast express delivery — now work together to take the stress out of exploring the roof of the world.

High-speed rail, China’s own satellite navigation, cashless payment by QR code, and nationwide express delivery now reach deep into the plateau. Together they remove most of the friction that once defined travel here — and that most overseas travel blogs still write about as if nothing changed.

What Has Changed

Five things that make Tibet travel different now

These are not minor improvements. They represent a genuinely different experience compared to ten years ago — and they are worth understanding before you arrive.

Perk 01 · Get There Fast

World-Class High-Speed Rail

Where overseas travellers often choose between slow, infrequent trains and expensive short flights, China’s high-speed rail connects almost every popular tourist city — including gateway cities to Tibet — at 250–350 km/h . Far faster than a regular train and more flexible than a flight, it also gives you something aeroplanes cannot: panoramic roadside scenery .

The high-speed rail connects at Xining City , where it meets the Qinghai-Tibet Railway — the world’s highest train line. We can book your train tickets as part of your tour. And here is what most guides do not tell you: we strongly recommend taking the Tibet train in the Lhasa → Xining direction on the way home. You cross the dramatic, high-altitude section in daylight, see far more scenery, then connect to the fast rail in Xining — cheaper than flying and far more memorable.

Perk 02 · Never Get Lost

Beidou Navigation — Built for Remote Heights

Download Gaode Map (Amap) , the most traveller-friendly local navigation app, and enable Beidou positioning on your phone. It keeps guiding you even in deep valleys, high-altitude passes, and areas where ordinary GPS often fails or lags.

Beidou supports precise road guidance, scenic-spot positioning, and even emergency short-message communication in no-signal zones — a genuine lifeline when you venture into the empty, stunning highland. Far more accurate for Tibet roads than any foreign navigation app, including checkpoint locations and seasonal pass conditions.

Perk 03 · Stay Connected

High-Speed Data for Almost Nothing

Mobile data in China is fast, widespread, and remarkably cheap by world standards. A 20 GB / 30-day tourist SIM costs around ¥100 — about $14 USD — less than a single day of international roaming on a European or American plan. 5G coverage reaches most of Tibet’s main tourist areas, and for the plateau and remote highland regions, China Mobile has by far the strongest signal of all carriers.

There are two options for foreign visitors. A local China Mobile SIM (bought at the airport with your passport) gives you a real +86 number and the best rural signal — ideal for Tibet. An international travel eSIM (bought online before departure, from providers like Holafly or Nomad) routes data via Hong Kong so Google and WhatsApp work normally, but its signal is weaker in remote areas.

The smart strategy for Tibet: use both . China Mobile SIM in one slot for local coverage, navigation, and WeChat. Home country eSIM in the second slot for WhatsApp and Gmail home. Most modern smartphones support two SIM slots simultaneously.

Perk 04 · Travel Without Cash

Universal Mobile QR Payment

If one thing shocks foreign travellers the most, it is how completely cashless everyday life in China has become. No need to carry piles of cash, no need to exchange currency before you enter and convert leftovers back when you leave. After a five-minute setup on arrival , you simply scan a QR code to pay for everything: scenic tickets, meals, hotels, taxis, street snacks, and souvenirs.

Both WeChat Pay and Alipay now accept foreign Visa and Mastercard cards — no Chinese bank account needed. Alipay is significantly easier for tourists : register with your foreign phone number, verify with your passport, link your card, and you are done. WeChat Pay sometimes requires a verified WeChat friend to scan your QR code during setup, which can be a hurdle if you have no contacts in China yet. Our advice: set up Alipay before you leave home while your phone still has roaming SMS active.

Perk 05 · Travel Light

Unbeatable Domestic Express Delivery

China’s express delivery service is an advantage few countries can match — and it now reaches even tourist towns in Tibet. No more hauling heavy luggage, local specialties, or bulky souvenirs across your whole trip.

Wherever you are — a coastal city, an inland scenic spot, or a market in Lhasa — you can send items to your next stop or ship them straight to your home country through a local courier. Buy that heavy Tibetan carpet freely and ship it from Lhasa. Keep traveling with just a daypack.

Before You Land

Set Up in Minutes, Then Travel Worry-Free

Three quick steps at your gateway city unlock all four perks — do these once, and the rest of China, including Tibet, becomes effortless.

Your 3-step arrival checklist

Do these once in your gateway city, and the rest of China — including Tibet — becomes effortless.

Get a China Mobile SIM card at the airport

China Mobile counters are at all major international airports. Buy a 20 GB / 30-day tourist SIM (around ¥100) with your passport. China Mobile has the strongest signal across the Tibetan plateau — other carriers have coverage gaps in remote areas. Keep your home SIM active in the second slot for WhatsApp and Gmail.

Set up Alipay with your foreign card — before you leave home

Alipay is the easiest cashless payment app for foreign visitors. Download it, register with your home phone number (you need roaming SMS active), verify with your passport, and link your Visa or Mastercard. Do this before departure — it is much easier with a reliable internet connection than scrambling in Lhasa.

Stay connected — and download your offline maps

With a local number you can make free WeChat voice and video calls home throughout the trip. Also download Gaode Maps (Amap) for the Tibet region while you have a fast connection — it works offline in remote areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a SIM card in China as a foreign tourist?

Yes. Foreign visitors can buy a prepaid tourist SIM card at airport counters and official carrier stores across China — bring your original passport for mandatory registration. For Tibet and remote highland areas, China Mobile has by far the best coverage. A popular choice is 20GB for 30 days at around ¥100 (about $14 USD). Note that local Chinese SIM cards are subject to mainland internet filtering — Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram will not work normally on them.

Does WhatsApp work in Tibet? How do I stay in touch with family at home?

WhatsApp and Google are filtered on mainland Chinese networks, so they do not work normally on a local Chinese SIM card. The recommended solution for Tibet visitors is a dual-SIM strategy: use a China Mobile physical SIM in one slot for strong local coverage across the plateau, and keep your home country eSIM or roaming SIM in the second slot for WhatsApp and Gmail. Alternatively, international travel eSIMs (bought online before departure from providers like Holafly or Nomad) route data via Hong Kong and allow WhatsApp and Google to work, though their signal is weaker in remote Tibet compared to China Mobile.

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay or Alipay in China in 2026?

Yes. Since 2023, both WeChat Pay and Alipay allow foreign visitors to link an international Visa or Mastercard credit card directly — no Chinese bank account is needed. Set it up at your gateway city (Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu) before heading to Tibet. It takes about five minutes and works almost everywhere in China, including Lhasa and tourist areas across Tibet.

What navigation app works best in Tibet in 2026?

Gaode Map (also known as Amap) with Beidou positioning enabled is the most reliable option. Google Maps has very limited coverage in China and is unreliable in remote highland areas. Gaode works even in deep valleys and high-altitude passes where ordinary GPS fails or lags, and supports emergency short-message communication in no-signal zones. Download offline maps for Tibet before you arrive in Lhasa.

Which direction is better on the Tibet train — to Lhasa or from Lhasa?

We strongly recommend the Lhasa to Xining direction for the return. You cross the highest, most dramatic section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in full daylight, see the plateau at its most spectacular, and then connect directly to the high-speed rail at Xining to get home quickly and cheaply — often far cheaper than flying out of Lhasa.

Where does the high-speed rail connect to the Tibet train?

The connection is at Xining City, the capital of Qinghai Province. High-speed trains run to Xining from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi’an, and most major Chinese cities at 250–350 km/h. From Xining station, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway departs for Lhasa — a 20-hour journey that crosses Tanggula Pass at 5,072 metres, the highest point on any railway in the world.

Can I ship luggage or souvenirs home from Tibet?

Yes. Express couriers including SF Express (顺丰) and Cainiao reach Lhasa and major tourist areas across Tibet. You can ship purchases — including large or heavy items like Tibetan carpets and thangka paintings — to your next stop inside China or arrange international shipping. This means you can travel with just a daypack for the entire Tibet portion of your trip.
