Easter in Tibet 2027
Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, and late March and early April are a fine time for Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake and Everest Base Camp. This page answers the questions we are asked most about travelling in Tibet at Easter, from our own office in Lhasa.
Is Easter a Good Time to Visit Tibet?
Yes, quite a good time. Late March and early April bring clear skies and the best views of the year at Yamdrok Lake and Everest Base Camp. In Nyingchi, the peach blossom festival turns whole valleys pink. It is also the quiet season, so most places have few tourists and lower prices — a good time for photography and for a trip that costs less.
Many people think Tibet must be cold at this time, because it is the end of winter. In fact the days are sunny, and in the sun you feel warm. That is why most homes in Lhasa have no heating. On high passes such as the Gampala Pass above Yamdrok Lake, and at Everest Base Camp, it is very windy, and nights are cold everywhere.

Weather in Tibet at Easter
| Place | Day | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Lhasa (3,650 m) | 14–16°C | 0 to −3°C |
| Shigatse | 12–15°C | −3 to −6°C |
| Everest Base Camp (5,200 m) | 7–10°C | −8 to −12°C, strong wind |
| Nyingchi | 15–17°C | 2–4°C, peach blossom season |
The difference between day and night is large, and the wind can make it feel colder. Skies are mostly clear, which is why the views of Everest and the turquoise colour of Yamdrok Lake are at their best now. For month-by-month details, see Tibet weather in March and Tibet weather in April.

Is Everest Base Camp Open at Easter?
Yes. At this time of year there is no road block on the way to Everest Base Camp, unless there is an unexpected heavy snowfall. Guesthouses and star-rated hotels on the way are open for tourists. In April the climbing teams set up their tents at the foot of the north face, so you may see the expedition camp too.

What Else Is Open: Namtso Lake and the High Passes
Most of Tibet is fully open at Easter, including the Potala Palace, the monasteries and the roads to Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse, Shigatse and Everest. The exception is Namtso Lake in North Tibet, the coldest part of the region. If snow falls, the icy road up to the viewpoint may close for the day. It is not closed every day, but if Namtso is a must for you, we plan a flexible day for it.
What Is Special About Tibet at Easter
Peach blossom in Nyingchi. In late March and April the wild peach trees of Nyingchi flower against the snow peaks, and the Peach Blossom Festival is held. Walking through the valleys feels like being in a fairy tale. Nyingchi is also lower than Lhasa, so starting your trip here gives you a much easier start: two days among the blossom while your body gets used to the altitude. See our Nyingchi tours.

The spring ploughing ceremony. In villages around Lhasa, Shigatse and Shannan, farmers hold the first ploughing of the year. They wear their finest traditional clothes. Oxen and tractors are dressed with white khata scarves and bells. Elders burn incense, say prayers and offer barley wine and chemar, the traditional grain box, to bless the land for a good harvest. It marks the start of the whole farming year. More about Tibet’s calendar: Tibetan festival calendar.
Where to Go in Tibet at Easter
- Lhasa: the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Sera Monastery and the Tibet Museum, before the summer crowds.
- Nyingchi: peach blossom under the snow peaks in late March and April — and, lower than Lhasa, a much easier start.
- Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse and Shigatse: the spring ploughing in the villages along the way.
- Everest Base Camp: open, with clear views; in April the climbing teams set up their tents below the north face.
- Namtso Lake: possible, but snow can close the road for a day, so we plan a flexible day.
- Mount Kailash: the season starts in late April, so an early Easter is too early for the kora.
Crowds and Prices at Easter
Easter is not a busy time in Tibet. Hotels are at late low-season prices and most places are quiet, with few tourists. The one exception is Nyingchi during the peach blossom season: hotels there are very expensive and Chinese-speaking guides are in short supply, so book early if Nyingchi is part of your plan.

Families and Children at Easter
We advise not to bring children under three years old to the Tibetan plateau. This advice comes from a group of Australian medical researchers who specialised in high-altitude illness and travelled with us — read children and altitude in Tibet. As for every traveller: please do not come to Tibet with a cold. A cold at high altitude can become very dangerous.
