What you can see in 8 days
Eight days is the classic Lhasa to Everest Base Camp trip, with one more day than the shortest version. The extra day is used to go up more slowly or to stay longer in Shigatse, which most travellers find makes Everest more enjoyable.
This length also fits a wildlife loop through the northern grasslands, where kiang, gazelle and black-necked cranes are often seen; the walk from Ganden Monastery to Samye; and cycling from Lhasa to Namtso Lake.
A typical 8-day Everest route
- Days 1–3 — Lhasa
- Day 4 — Yamdrok Lake, Karo La, Gyantse, overnight Shigatse
- Day 5 — Shigatse to Everest Base Camp
- Day 6 — Sunrise at Everest, back to Shigatse
- Day 7 — Tashilhunpo Monastery, back to Lhasa
- Day 8 — Departure
Who it suits
Most first-time visitors who want Everest. The extra day means less driving each day and more time in Shigatse, which makes the high days easier. It also suits nature lovers and walkers who prefer grassland, lakes and wildlife to monasteries.
