Nyingchi Tours — Eastern Tibet

Nyingchi is regarded as the ‘Switzerland of Tibet’. Abundant with forests, snow-capped mountains, rivers and flowers, Nyingchi is extremely popular among tourists seeking a greener, softer side of the Tibetan plateau.

What you come east for

Lulang Forest, the Basum Tso lake, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon and Namcha Barwa — at 7,782 m the easternmost of the great Himalayan peaks. The valley floor sits lower than Lhasa, and the railway from Lhasa takes about three and a half hours.

Which route to choose

Five routes here reach Nyingchi, from seven days to thirteen. Four begin in Lhasa and head east into the forests and valleys; the longest adds Everest Base Camp and Namtso to the eastern country, so the greenest and the highest parts of Tibet come in one journey.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to see in Nyingchi?

The Basum Tso lake, Lulang Forest, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon and Namcha Barwa — at 7,782 m the easternmost of the great Himalayan peaks. In spring the valleys fill with peach blossom, which is when Nyingchi is best known.

How do I get to Nyingchi?

Most guests reach it from Lhasa, either by the railway — about three and a half hours — or by road along the G318. Nyingchi also has its own airport, and several of the routes here begin or end there.

Is Nyingchi lower than Lhasa?

Yes. Nyingchi town sits lower than Lhasa and the forested valleys around it are lower still, which is one reason several of these routes travel east first and then turn west toward Shigatse and Everest.
