In October autumn deepens across Tibet. The leaves turn yellow and it gets noticeably colder, but it is sunny almost every day, with some of the clearest skies of the year for mountain views.
October is the start of the dry season. Rain almost stops and the air is clear and crisp. The golden autumn landscape makes October one of the best months for photography.
What to Visit in October
Lhasa — Cultural Circuit
Perfect weather for sightseeing in Lhasa. The Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street look magnificent under the blue October sky. After the first week of the month, crowds are smaller than in summer.
Friendship Highway — Shigatse & Gyantse
The road through Yamdrok Lake, Gyantse and Shigatse is stunning in October, with autumn colours and golden light.
Namtso Lake (4,718m)
Still open in October. The lake turns a deep blue under clear autumn skies. Nights are freezing, so bring warm clothes.
Everest Base Camp (5,200m)
One of the best months for Everest. After the rains and before the deep winter cold, the views of the north face are outstanding. Mornings are cold, but the weather is stable.
What to Wear in October
Layers are important. A medium down jacket for mornings and evenings, and a lighter layer for sunny middle days. Nights are close to freezing in Lhasa and well below freezing higher up. Sunscreen and sunglasses are still essential.
1–7 October: China’s National Day holiday has less effect on Tibet than you might think, because most Chinese families spend those seven days on road trips closer to home, and Tibet is far away. After 7 October it becomes even quieter.
