Everest Base Camp & Kailash Tours Reopened — Restrictions Now Lifted

Good news for travellers: the Tibet Tourism Bureau has confirmed that tours to Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash are now open again. Tourist permit applications for both destinations are being accepted. The road previously reserved for disaster relief vehicles has been reopened to tourist traffic. If you had a planned trip to EBC or Kailash that was affected by the suspension, please contact us to confirm your arrangements.

Everest Base Camp & Kailash Tours Suspended — Road Reserved for Disaster Relief (Lifted)

The Tibet Tourism Bureau had issued an official notice temporarily suspending all tours to Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash. The road used by these tours was reserved exclusively for vehicles carrying emergency relief supplies to the Gyirong border area. This restriction has since been lifted — see the latest update above.

Gyirong & Zhangmu Border Crossings Suspended — Glacier Collapse and Mudflow Disaster

On 26 August 2026, a glacier collapse and mudflow on the China–Nepal border destroyed the Gyirong Port crossing and triggered a border area permit suspension effective 28 August. The Zhangmu crossing was also closed at that time by Nepal-side monsoon road damage. Update, October 2026: there is no date for rebuilding Gyirong; Zhangmu is officially open but not supported for tourists and can close at short notice, so we plan travel between Tibet and Nepal by air between Lhasa and Kathmandu. See the September update above for the subsequent EBC and Kailash suspension.

Why we publish this

Most Tibet travel information online is either outdated or written by people who have never been there. This section is written by a guide based in Lhasa who is directly affected by the same conditions you will face. When something changes — a border closes, a permit window shifts, a road washes out — we publish what we know, as we know it.

If you have a specific question about current conditions, contact us directly.
