Nyingchi Travel Advice
Nyingchi (Linzhi) in southeast Tibet is often called the “Switzerland of Tibet”. It is much lower than the rest of the plateau, with thick forests, deep river gorges, snow peaks and a mild climate.
1. Best Travel Time to Nyingchi
Nyingchi’s main town, Bayi, lies at about 2,950 m, much lower than central Tibet. Late March and April are the most famous time, when the peach trees flower in the valleys below the snow mountains. The Peach Blossom Festival is held at this time.
September and October are just as beautiful, with golden and red forests along the Yarlung Tsangpo. Summer (June to August) is wetter, but everything is green.
Tip: because Nyingchi is lower, some travellers spend a few days here before Lhasa to adjust more gently to the altitude.
2. Dining in Nyingchi
Nyingchi has the widest choice of food in Tibet. You will find Tibetan dishes (yak hotpot, tsampa), Sichuan food, and dishes of the local Monpa and Lhoba peoples. Local specialities include stone-pot chicken, Tibetan fragrant pork and wild forest mushrooms. Fresh vegetables and fruit are plentiful.
3. Shopping in Nyingchi
- caterpillar fungus and other local herbs
- dried wild mushrooms
- Monpa and Lhoba crafts, such as wooden bowls and bamboo work
- local fruit wines
- Tibetan incense
4. Transportation
| By train | the Lhasa–Nyingchi railway, about 3.5 hours by Fuxing train from Lhasa |
| By air | Nyingchi Mainling Airport, with flights from Chengdu, Chongqing and other cities |
| By road from Lhasa | about 400 km on the Lhasa–Nyingchi highway, about 5–6 hours |
| Altitude | Bayi town about 2,950 m |
Nyingchi is also a gentle way into Tibet: fly in at about 2,950 m, spend a few quiet days, then take the train to Lhasa. Our 11-day Nyingchi to Xining train tour is built this way.
5. Health & Altitude
Nyingchi is one of the easiest places in Tibet to get used to the altitude. Still, take your first day easy, drink water and avoid alcohol. If you fly in from a city at sea level, a mild headache on arrival is normal and usually passes within a day.
6. Must-See Attractions
- Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon — one of the deepest canyons in the world, with views of Namcha Barwa (7,782 m)
- Basum Tso — an emerald lake with a small temple on an island
- Nanyi Valley — forest, waterfalls and quiet villages
- Peach blossom villages — such as Gala, at their best in late March and early April
- Lulang forest — alpine meadows and forest below the Sergyi La pass
