Tsedang Travel Advice

Tsedang (Tsetang), the main town of Lhoka (Shannan), is known as the cradle of Tibetan civilisation. The Yarlung Valley around it holds Tibet’s first palace, first monastery and many of its oldest legends.

1. Best Travel Time to Tsedang

April to October is the most comfortable time. The valley is milder and drier than much of Tibet, with short showers in summer. From May to September many pilgrims visit the old temples.

2. Dining in Tsedang

Unlike most of Tibet, Tsedang is dominated by Sichuan food: spicy hotpot, rice dishes and noodle soups. Tibetan restaurants serve tsampa, butter tea, yak hotpot and momos, and there are well-stocked supermarkets.

3. Shopping in Tsedang

The market in the town centre is a good place for souvenirs:

  • thangka paintings
  • Tibetan rugs and woven cloth
  • local barley wine and dried herbs
  • Buddhist ritual objects and prayer beads

4. Transportation

From Lhasa about 180 km, about 2–3 hours by expressway, or by train on the Lhasa–Nyingchi railway (Shannan station)
From Gonggar Airport about an hour by road
Samye Monastery about an hour from Tsedang by road
Altitude about 3,550 m

5. Health & Altitude Advice

At 3,550 m, Tsedang is a little lower than Lhasa. If you have already spent a few days in Lhasa, you will find it comfortable. If you arrive straight from the airport, rest on your first day.

6. Must-See Attractions

  • Yumbulagang — said to be the oldest building in Tibet, on a hilltop above the Yarlung Valley
  • Samye Monastery — Tibet’s first Buddhist monastery, founded in the 8th century, now reached by road and bridge across the Yarlung Tsangpo
  • Trandruk Monastery — one of the oldest temples in Tibet
  • Chimpuk Hermitage — sacred meditation caves in the hills above Samye
  • Tombs of the Tibetan Kings — the burial mounds of the early kings at Chongye
