Peach blossom and snow peaks in Nyingchi
Tibet travel guide

The Best Time to Visit Nyingchi

Nyingchi in southeast Tibet lies at about 3,000 m, much lower than most of Tibet. It follows the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nyang rivers, with forests, snow peaks and a mild, humid climate. It is often called the “Switzerland of Tibet”.

The average yearly temperature is about 9°C, rainfall is around 650 mm, and there are over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. More than 3,500 plant species grow here, so the landscape changes colour with every season.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

Spring, early summer and autumn are the best times, when the forests are green or golden and the sky is clear.

Many travellers start their Tibet trip in Nyingchi, because it is lower and greener than Lhasa — see our 11-day Nyingchi to Xining train tour.

Special Highlight: Peach Blossom Festival (March–April)

From late March to mid-April, wild peach trees flower along the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nyang rivers, with snow mountains behind. The Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival is one of the most popular events in Tibet, so book early.

Spring

March to May, about −3 to 15°C. Peach blossom in late March and April. It gets warmer from April. Bring layers.

Summer

May to August, about 10–21°C. A very good season. Green forests, warm days and cool nights. Rain increases from June. Heavy rain can cause landslides in July and August, so allow a spare day.

Autumn

September to October, about 9–20°C. A very good season. Snow mountains and red, orange and yellow forests. Clear air and less rain. Excellent for photography.

Winter

November to February, about −3 to 10°C. Milder than the rest of Tibet, sunny and dry, with cold evenings and few tourists.

Rainy season caution: from June to September, heavy rain can cause landslides and close roads, especially around the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. We watch road conditions and adjust the route if needed.
