Dining in Nagchu

Food in Nagchu may not suit every Western taste, but it will give you plenty of energy for the journey. There is always yak butter tea, and also sweet milk tea, which most visitors prefer.

Food is filling but can be plain. There are a few decent Chinese restaurants in town, but the Sichuan, Tibetan and Muslim restaurants are basic. Bring some of your favourite snacks from Lhasa.

Practical tip: buy snacks and supplies in Lhasa before you go. Nagchu is remote and high (about 4,500 m), so the choice is small and prices are higher.

Restaurants in Nagchu County

  • Erjie Baozidian — a clean, friendly bun shop. The steamed meat buns (baozi) are the thing to order, and there are other simple dishes too.
  • Lhasa Nola Bozee — a clean Tibetan teahouse with traditional seating. Good for butter tea, sweet tea and Tibetan snacks.

Restaurants in Sok County

  • Dongpo Jiulou — the best restaurant in town, at the main crossroads. A little pricey for the area, but the most reliable proper meal in Sok.
  • Snowland Happy Tibet Restaurant — tea and thukpa (noodle soup). A comfortable stop on the road north.

Visiting During Nagchu Horse-Racing Festival?

During the horse-racing festival in August, food stalls and pop-up restaurants appear all over the festival ground. Try nomad food: fresh yoghurt, dried yak meat, tsampa and butter tea.
