Tibet Train from Chongqing to Lhasa

The train from Chongqing to Lhasa runs every other day and takes about 35 hours, several hours less than when it started, thanks to newer, faster lines across Sichuan and Gansu.

Station: in recent years the Lhasa train has left from Chongqing West Station, not Chongqing North. Always check the station on your ticket.

Chongqing West Railway Station

Chongqing West is a modern station in Shapingba District, in the western part of the city, some distance from the centre.

District Shapingba District

About the Chongqing–Lhasa Train

The train usually leaves Chongqing in the evening and reaches Lhasa in the morning of the third day. The main stops are Nanchong, Guangyuan, Lanzhou, Xining, Golmud and Nagchu. Times change with each new timetable.

Key Points to Note

Every-other-day departure

The Chongqing train does NOT run every day. It alternates with the Chengdu train: on a day when the Chengdu train runs, the Chongqing train doesn’t.

Tibet Travel Permit is essential

You need your Tibet Travel Permit to buy your ticket and to board. Book your tour early so we can apply for it in time.

Allow extra time to reach the station

Chongqing West is far from the centre and traffic can be heavy. Allow plenty of time.

Required Documents

  • Foreign visitors and Taiwan residents: passport and Tibet Travel Permit
  • Hong Kong and Macau residents: Home Return Permit
  • Chinese citizens: ID card

Chongqing tip: with an evening train, you have the whole day to explore Chongqing, a dramatic city built on hills above two rivers. Try a hotpot dinner before you go to the station.

We answer within 12 hours, Monday to Saturday.
