What you can see in 13 days

Thirteen days is the usual length for Mount Kailash with time to spare, or for adding the ruins of the Guge Kingdom and the earth forest of Zanda in the far west. It also allows a slow loop through Nyingchi, Everest and Namtso, or a train journey that starts in Beijing and Xi’an.

The far west is remote: long driving days on good roads, small towns, and some of the widest views in Asia.

A typical 13-day Kailash and Guge route

  • Days 1–3 — Lhasa
  • Days 4–6 — West to Lake Manasarovar
  • Days 7–9 — The Kailash kora
  • Days 10–11 — Zanda and the Guge Kingdom
  • Days 12–13 — Return and departure

Who it suits

Travellers drawn to the far west: Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar and the ruins of the old Guge Kingdom. It suits people who enjoy long journeys and wide empty landscapes, and who are happy with simple guesthouses in the remote towns.

Good to know

Western Tibet needs extra permits, which we arrange. Best months are May to September. Nights in the west are cold even in summer.
