What you can see in 4 days
Four days is a Lhasa trip. You fly or take the train into Lhasa at 3,650 m and spend the first day resting, because almost everyone feels the altitude on arrival. The next three days are for the city: the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor pilgrim circuit around it, the monk debate at Sera Monastery in the afternoon, and Drepung or the Tibet Museum.
Lhasa is the lowest point of most Tibet trips, so a four-day stay is also the gentlest way to see whether you like being at altitude before planning a longer journey another year.
A typical 4-day route
- Day 1 — Arrive in Lhasa, rest
- Day 2 — Jokhang Temple, Barkhor, Tibet Museum or Drepung
- Day 3 — Potala Palace, Sera Monastery debate
- Day 4 — Free morning, departure
Who it suits
A first visit to Tibet, a short stop on a longer trip through China, or travellers who want to see the heart of Tibetan Buddhism without long drives. It is also the right length for older travellers and families, because every night is spent in Lhasa and every day can be made shorter or longer.
Good to know
Best months are April to June and September to October. You need the Tibet Travel Permit, which we arrange; no other permit is needed for Lhasa city. Private tours run on any dates; small groups have fixed dates.
