The trip at a glance
Shanghai’s Bund is one of the great urban waterfronts of the world: a sweep of early 20th-century European-style banking buildings facing the Huangpu River, with the soaring skyline of Pudong behind. The French Concession — leafy avenues, art deco apartments, boutique cafés — is Shanghai’s most atmospheric neighbourhood.
From Shanghai, the bullet train heads inland to Henan Province and the sacred Song Mountain, home of Shaolin Temple — the birthplace of Kung Fu and one of China’s most historically significant monasteries. Shaolin monks have practised and taught martial arts here for over 1,500 years. A Kung Fu performance and a morning of training observation is an experience unlike anything available in a city.
For those whose passion is Taichi rather than Shaolin-style Kung Fu, the Chen family village of Chenjiagou — the birthplace of Taichi — is an alternative option 20km from Jiaozuo in the same region. Contact us to discuss.

Day by day
Shanghai Bund → French Concession → Shaolin Temple → Kung Fu Performance → Song Mountain → Qinghai-Tibet Railway → Lhasa → Potala Palace → Yamdrok Lake
Day1
Arrive Shanghai — The Bund, Nanjing Road, Yuyuan Garden
Arrive in Shanghai. An evening walk on the Bund — the famous waterfront promenade lined with art deco and neoclassical buildings from the 1920s and 30s, facing the illuminated Pudong skyline across the Huangpu River — is one of the great first impressions of any city in Asia. Continue through the lights and energy of Nanjing Road, and into the ancient Yuyuan Garden with its classical pavilions and ornamental rockeries.
Day2
Shanghai — French Concession; Bullet Train to Zhengzhou
A morning stroll through the French Concession — Shanghai’s most beautiful neighbourhood, with plane-tree-lined avenues, art deco apartment buildings, boutique coffee shops, and the lively Tianzifang lane complex of galleries and craft studios. After lunch, board the bullet train to Zhengzhou (approximately 3.5 hours) in Henan Province — the gateway to Shaolin Temple.
Day3
Shaolin Temple, Kung Fu Performance, Song Mountain
Drive from Zhengzhou to Dengfeng (approximately 1 hour) at the foot of Song Mountain — one of China’s five sacred mountains. Shaolin Temple, founded in 495 AD, is the spiritual home of Kung Fu and one of China’s most revered Buddhist sites. Watch a morning Kung Fu training session in the temple courtyard, then a full performance by the Shaolin warrior monks — dramatic, precise, and unlike anything seen in a city. Explore the scenic Song Mountain trails in the afternoon.
Day4
Bullet Train Zhengzhou → Xining (Connecting Point) — Board Tibet Train
Return to Zhengzhou and board the bullet train to Xining (approximately 4 hours) — the mandatory gateway for all Tibet trains. Board the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in Xining in the evening. The train departs into the high plateau darkness.
Day5
On the Qinghai-Tibet Railway — Arrive Lhasa
A day of extraordinary scenery: the open Tibetan plateau, Tibetan antelope and yak herds, the Tanggula Pass at 5,072 metres. Arrive in Lhasa in the evening.
Day6
Lhasa — Rest and Acclimatize
Rest and hydrate. At 3,600 metres, your body needs a full day to adjust to the altitude before sightseeing begins.
Day7
Lhasa — Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street
The Potala Palace with its gilded chapels and centuries of Dalai Lama history, the sacred Jokhang Temple and its precious Jowo Rinpoche statue, and Barkhor Street’s vibrant pilgrim circuit — the three defining sights of Lhasa.
Day8
Lhasa — Sera Monastery, Tibet Museum
Sera Monastery’s afternoon monk debates (15:00–17:00, except Sundays) and the Tibet Museum. One experience is loud, theatrical, and alive; the other is quiet and scholarly. Together they cover Tibetan culture from two completely different angles.
Day9
Lhasa — Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, Gyantse (Day Trip)
Drive west over Kampala Pass to Yamdrok Lake’s vivid turquoise panorama, past Karola Glacier, and on to Gyantse’s extraordinary Kumbum Pagoda. Return to Lhasa in the evening.
Day10
Lhasa — Free Day
A free day to revisit a favourite site, browse Barkhor Street’s handicraft stalls, or simply rest at altitude before departure.
Day11
Lhasa Departure
Transfer to Lhasa airport or train station. This 5-day Tibet example is fully adjustable — extend to Everest Base Camp or Kailash, or shorten if time is limited.

Questions travellers ask
How large will my group be?
Join-in departures run with a minimum of 3 travellers — usually 3–8 pax, and never more than 16. You choose the departure date, the starting point and the itinerary length that suits you; guests on different day counts travel together on the shared legs, and each group leaves when their own itinerary ends. If you prefer, this route can also run as a private tour for your own party only. A 3–8 group costs a little more per person and is quieter, with more freedom to change the day on the road; a 3–16 group costs less per person and gives you more people to travel with.
Which permits does this tour need?
We arrange all required Tibet permits for you as part of the booking — you only need a valid passport. Depending on the areas visited this can include the Tibet Travel Permit (TTB), the Aliens’ Travel Permit (PSB), the Frontier Pass and, for sensitive areas, a Military Permit.
How do I get to the starting point of the tour?
The tour starts in Shanghai. You can reach it by flight or by the Qinghai–Tibet railway — either way we meet you on arrival. Many travellers fly in and take the train out (or the other way round) to see both faces of the plateau. We are happy to advise on flights and train tickets as part of your booking.
Can this tour be customized?
Yes — every tour on this site can also run as a private departure with your own dates and pace, arranged by our own office in Lhasa. Send us your dates, group size and interests and we will adapt the itinerary around you.
