The Potala was first and foremost the residence of the Dalai Lama and his large staff. In addition, it was the seat of Tibetan government, where all ceremonies of state were held; it housed a school for religious training of monks and administrators; and it was one of Tibet's major pilgrimage destinations because of the tombs of past Dalai Lamas
It is very different with other monasteries. It was founded in 1418. The compound housed approximately 15 different monasteries, made up of three different sects (Gelugpa, Sakyapa and Kahdampa) in a rare instance of tolerance amongst the Tibetan orders of Buddhism. It is the only monastery that houses monks from different orders in harmony. As a result, its structural style, deities enshrined and murals are very special.
