D05 Reting/Nam Tso

In the morning drive on rugged road before reach the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Pass by Damxung town and the 5,150-meter Lhachen La and reach the Nam Tso or Tengri Nor (heaven lake in Mongolian) along the newly paved way and set up camp at Tashi Dorie peninsula. Nam Tso, the biggest salty lake of Tibet, is 70 kilometers long from east to west and 30 kilometers wide from north to south, covering an area of 1,920 square kilometers with an altitude of 4,700 meters above sea level. It is said the holy lake and the holy mountain Nyenchentangla are a couple of lovers, who altogether guard the vast pasture and cattle. Explore the Tashi peninsula by walking around the holy hill, the cliffs of which have eroded over the centuries. On the way piles of mani stones stand. Also visit the nomads in yak hair tents who have been living on the pastures between the holy Nam Tso and Nyenchentangla.

D06 Nam Tso/Yanpacheng

Head for Yanpacheng. Cross over the Lhachen La and stop at Damxung to have lunch. Afterwards drive about 2 hours along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway to come to Yanpacheng. Visit the monastery of Yanpacheng, once the seat of Sharmapa Lama, a reincarnated Living Buddha of the Kargyu lineage and the holder of the Gilt Red Hat. Yanpacheng is 90 km to the north of Lhasa and is rich in terrestrial heat and densely distributed with various fountains, geysers, hot springs, boiling springs as well as hot-water lakes. It is a wonderful enjoyment to take a bath in an indoor swimming pool, which is supplied by fresh hot springs of Yanpacheng.

D07 Yanpacheng—Darjeeling

O/N: Camp only [B+L+D]

In the early morning the escort crew is busy to load the luggage with yaks; after that start trekking by the Shigatse-Golmud Highway (Qinghai-Tibet Highway) for about 4 1/2 hours to the Darjeeling Monastery (approx. 4.450 m). If possible, attend a prayer ceremony in the monastery and set up camp nearby the beautiful nun monastery with rural.

 

D08 Darjeeling—Nangba

O/N: Camp only [B+L+D]

Trek on the expanded pastures with herds of yak and sheep; walk through valleys and small villages; cross over short hills. Trek about 5 hours and reach Nangba (approx. 4.950 m) to set up camp in a suitable place.

 

D09 Nangba—some valley

O/N: Camp only [B+L+D]

Leave Nangba and trek over highland pastures with herds of yak and sheep; keep on trekking upward to get across the Lhasar La (5.340 m), which is only recognized by a protruding rock. On the way cross over brooks; walk down a valley; climb a short distance to a pass and then descend to a high valley close to Laten La (approx. 5.050 m). Though the trekking time is about 8 hours, the journey is not hard and the campground is very beautiful.

D10 Some valley—Tsurpu

O/N: Camp only [B+L+D]

Pass a small village; walk down along a good road with many mani stones besides. After approximately 3 1/2 hours, settle down the last time in tents. In the afternoon trek to the nearby mountain, where there are many mediators in caves. From the top of the mountain a fantastic valley is viewed.

D11 Tsurpu/Lhasa

Visit Tsurpu Monastery today. Since 1992 the master monastery of the Karma Kagyu Sect had been presided by Urgyen Thinley Dorje the 17th Karmapa. Tsurpu was established in 1189 by Duesum Khyenpa, a pupil of Gampopa and the first Karmapa. He introduced the principle of reincarnation into Tibet. He told his disciples that he would reincarnate and pointed out the location of the second Karmapas reborn. In contrast to Yellow Caps (Gelug) the Karmapa Kagye are regarded as the Black Hat and the Karmapas the holder of this sect. The monastery was restored in 1984. In the individual temples are statues of the different Karmapas. The 16th Karmapa Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981) had traveled to Europe and America for spreading of Tibetan Buddhism in west after he left for Sikkim in 1958. After the visit drive back to Lhasa.

 

D12 Lhasa/Gonggar Airport

Departure transfers for the flight out. Service ends.
